Walleye Fishing Report Lake Erie Michigan 05-29-2019

Lake Erie walleye was good despite the iffy weather. #1 Buoy off the Raisin River in 24 ft of water and in front of Brest Bay. Mini disc’s and spoons back 70 to 80 ft, any spoon with pink or chartreuse seemed best. Low divers 45 back and high divers 55 back. Please be mindful of other boats, be polite and give way. Fishing was very good in front of the Edison plant from 18 to 22 ft. deep. Bandits fished 80 ft back, in perch or black w/gold back colors seemed to produce the best for me. Despite the muddy water and East winds the walleye were cooperative. The walleye seemed larger on average than this time last year. The water surface temp. was around 57.5 degrees so very slow troll was needed, 1.5 mph

Perch fishing has been on again off again all this week. Best bets in Michigan are the Michigan dump, between the dump and the Raisin River, also between the Raisin River buoys and Stoney Point in 24′ of water. E buoy and C buoy were producing  last weekend. I have not fished E or C in over a week. This general area has been good for me. A word of caution! if you venture over the line you will get stopped and checked by the Ohio DNR. I’ve been checked this week only being over the line a few hundred yards near E buoy! I see many small boats race out not knowing they are over the line when they see charter boats fishing. The end result, they received tickets for not possessing an Ohio fishing license.

If you see a pack of boats perch fishing it does not necessarily mean they are catching perch. Boats attract boats! If you see a boat catching perch don’t pull up and fish on top of them! The likelihood of you pulling that boats fish to you are usually “O”. Best bet is to slowly cruse the area using your graph, sometimes you will only mark small amounts of fish on or near the bottom. Set up and fish for them, give it 20 minutes or so. Sometimes the perch start off biting slow but more will fish be attracted to the activity and the bite will improve.   If your bite does not improve move a few hundred yards. I’ve moved up 6 or 7 times in a 1 mile area before I found a good school on the feed. You will feel and be more successful if you find your own fish.

Lake Erie Perch Catch Levels for 2018

Yellow Perch Anglers can expect excellent perch fishing in the Western Basin in 2018. Perch anglers in the west will primarily catch fish from 2014 and 2015, providing a good range of sizes. Fall fishing in 2017 produced both excellent sizes and catch rates. The largest perch in the Western Basin will come from 2013 and older year classes.

Surface temperature is around 61 degrees. Slow trolling for walleye with Thunderstick Jr. and Bandits seemed to produce. Perch color baits. 60 ft back. Stoney Point and in front of Brest Bay in 20 to 24 ft of water produced nice walleye with only a few under size. The White Bass were thick at times. There are walleye between E buoy and Bolles Harbor in 15 to 18 ft of water, the fish were scattered here and there and thinned out near the Ohio boarder.

Michigan Arctic Grayling habitat research

$117,175 grant from the

Recently completed work supported by this grant addressed two immediate needs for a successful Arctic grayling reintroduction. The first was to collect stream habitat and fish community data in the upper Manistee River. This data collection allowed for both the evaluation of current stream habitat conditions and the development of criteria to determine which other streams may provide suitable habitat for Arctic grayling.Arctic Grayling Fishing

Michigan’s Arctic Grayling Initiative is a statewide partnership effort focused on restoring self-sustaining populations of this native fish and was founded by the DNR and the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in June 2016. Interest in this initiative has grown rapidly since 2016, and the partnership now includes more than 40 organizations.

Perch Fishing Report Lake Erie Michigan 07-21-2017

Perch fishing is starting to pick up in Michigan waters. W buoy out in front of Toledo Beach Marina has produced limit catches but it’s on again off again. E buoy area is producing some sizable perch to, but it’s hit or miss. Out towards the end of the Raisin River buoys in 20 feet of water  holds perch but you have to move around til you find a sizable school to fish. The bite seems to start off slow then pick up, give it a half hour in one spot. If the bite doesn’t improve move, sometimes it only takes moving 200 yards or so. Some walleye are being caught but be sure they are over 15″ if you keep them. There have been a lot of tickets passed out for “15” walleye this season on both the Michigan and Ohio side of the lake!! So far Ohio waters have produced the most consistent catches of yellow perch. Either side of the shipping channel north of the Toledo Lighthouse all the way to Sputnik.

Most agree this has been one of the more productive perch fishing seasons in recent years!

Limit catches are common in the Western Basin. Don’t be greedy, I’ve talked to a number of angles who take a few more than their limit and have paid for it in the form of a ticket. With that said most anglers go to the usual spots reported on – like the #1 buoy or Stoney Point where you will find packs of boats. I’ve avoided these areas. I’ve fished between the packs and done very well. Between The Raisin River and Bolles Harbor along the line has been very productive and I never see a boat around us! Two of us captains fished the swamp in front of Luna Pier in 12 feet of water earlier in the week after our morning charter just to check it out. We took 100 perch in an hour and a half, all a very nice grade. We saw one boat about a half mile from us! Don’t be a pack rat move around find your own fish. By exploring the lake a little you will gain knowledge and experience.

Strarted perch fishing this week, dispite the hot weather and light North East wind fishing was good.

Up off #1 buoy on the Raisin River produced 150 perch that weighted 36 lbs. (live weight) Yesterday just off the North East corner of the Michigan dump produced 120 perch that weighted 32 pounds

We used a mix of emerald and sand shiners with no difference on what the fish preferred

Walleye fishing is starting to pick up again around Stoney Point. The water temperature is in the mid 50’s. Trolling Thunder Stick Jr. in purple, or darker colors seemed best from 16 to 24 feet of water.

Lots of spikes over the dumping grounds with a few nice keeper walleye. The water was murky from recent storms and run off. Take it slow on the speed the fish are still a little lethargic but the water temp. is on the rise. My buddies caught a few trolling from “E” buoy towards Bolls Harbor yesterday, but again lots of spikes. Keep checking your lines because it’s hard to tell when your loaded up with the lil fellers!

Lots of boats fishing between Turtle Island and the Toledo Lighthouse, some jigging some trolling. Success rates vary due to water clarity and run off from the Maumee River. If you fish this area make sure you know where your at, you may want to have an Ohio fishing license on board, the Michigan Ohio boarder runs right through the middle of Turtle Island and heads North to the Detroit River
