Walleye Fishing Report Lake Erie Michigan 07-18-2019

It seems you can’t troll past a spot on the Western Basin of Lake Erie without catching a walleye. Best action I’ve seen is around the #1 bouy off the Raisin River north to Stoney Point to in front of Fermi. There are fish south of the bouy, but the farther you go south of the bouy the less fish there are. There are also walleye between #1 and the Edison plant in 16 to 18 feet of water. Out in front of Bolles Harbor on an angle towards #1 has produced limit catches for my buddies. Seems like the fish are in that area first thing in the morning feeding. As the sun rises they tend to sink to the

bottom, so you may have to lengthen your leads to 80 ft. I’ve been running wiggle warts 60 to 70 ft. back with a trolling speed of between 2.7 and 3 mph depending on the angle of my troll. Best colors are ones with a red bill and gold belly. Straight upwind seems to produce the best for me. Mini discs and spoons have produced just as well at 65 ft back and they help keep the bits of string weeds off the spoons. Check your baits often for weeds. High drivers at 45 (set at 3) and low divers at 32 ft (set at 1) with Silver Streak Jr.  are hot some days and not so other days.

Give way to fellow trollers there are plenty of fish for everyone so don’t crowd each other. We are all out to have some fun and catch some fish. Remember any boat approaching from your left has the Right of Way.

As you all know Lake Erie walleye fishing has been on fire all season. The water temp is getting warm enough to start running some fast moving body baits. I’ve been running spoons and mini disc’s about 80 feet back with #12 mono. Some have been running 40 Jets 45 to 50 back in 22 ft of water. Any where around Brest Bay has been very productive all the way into 17′ of water. Explore right inside the bay, we caught walleye starting from about 3/4 of a mile out from Brest Bay Marina to the Raisin River. Any thing with pink, chartreuse or purple seem best. A note of caution, the storms come on to the lake this year are violent so keep an eye on the sky.

Lake Erie walleye was good despite the iffy weather. #1 Buoy off the Raisin River in 24 ft of water and in front of Brest Bay. Mini disc’s and spoons back 70 to 80 ft, any spoon with pink or chartreuse seemed best. Low divers 45 back and high divers 55 back. Please be mindful of other boats, be polite and give way. Fishing was very good in front of the Edison plant from 18 to 22 ft. deep. Bandits fished 80 ft back, in perch or black w/gold back colors seemed to produce the best for me. Despite the muddy water and East winds the walleye were cooperative. The walleye seemed larger on average than this time last year. The water surface temp. was around 57.5 degrees so very slow troll was needed, 1.5 mph

Fish wholesaler gets year for illegal trout

CHARLEVOIX, Mich. (AP) — A fish wholesaler in northern Michigan has been sentenced to a year in custody after pleading guilty to acquiring trout that were illegally caught in the Great Lakes.

Federal Judge Paul Maloney says John Cross III of Charlevoix can serve his sentence in the off-season. He appeared in court Monday, months after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.

The government says Cross and his business, Cross Fisheries, bought about 50,000 pounds of lake trout from a fisherman who was using so-called trap nets. Those fish should have been thrown back into the water.

Separately, Cross’ business pleaded guilty to a felony. The judge will hold another hearing to determine a financial penalty.

The Huron River was stocked with 1,700 brown trout and 1,200 rainbow trout, all ranging in size from 13 to 19 inches. Perch Fishing Report Lake Erie MIchigan 08-17-2018

Perch fishing has been on again off again all this week. Best bets in Michigan are the Michigan dump, between the dump and the Raisin River, also between the Raisin River buoys and Stoney Point in 24′ of water. E buoy and C buoy were producing  last weekend. I have not fished E or C in over a week. This general area has been good for me. A word of caution! if you venture over the line you will get stopped and checked by the Ohio DNR. I’ve been checked this week only being over the line a few hundred yards near E buoy! I see many small boats race out not knowing they are over the line when they see charter boats fishing. The end result, they received tickets for not possessing an Ohio fishing license.

If you see a pack of boats perch fishing it does not necessarily mean they are catching perch. Boats attract boats! If you see a boat catching perch don’t pull up and fish on top of them! The likelihood of you pulling that boats fish to you are usually “O”. Best bet is to slowly cruse the area using your graph, sometimes you will only mark small amounts of fish on or near the bottom. Set up and fish for them, give it 20 minutes or so. Sometimes the perch start off biting slow but more will fish be attracted to the activity and the bite will improve.   If your bite does not improve move a few hundred yards. I’ve moved up 6 or 7 times in a 1 mile area before I found a good school on the feed. You will feel and be more successful if you find your own fish.

Lake Erie Charter Fishing Trips

A trip on a charter fishing boat is a great way to spend a day on the water

Looking to spend a few hours or a whole day fishing this summer? Michigan’s waters offer plenty of opportunities to catch a variety of fish, and summer is an ideal time to try. Charter fishing businesses throughout the state offer a great way to explore Michigan’s world-class fisheries.

Licensed charter captains provide the boats and all the equipment, plus the knowledge needed for a fun half-day or day on the water. Charter businesses in Michigan help children and adults have memorable fishing experiences – whether it’s reeling in a fish for the first time or trying your hand at catching a new species.

“Last year 72,000 anglers in Michigan participated in more than 18,000 charter fishing trips on the Great Lakes and other navigable waters,” said Donna Wesander, a DNR fisheries technician who tracks charter fishing data. “These anglers caught nearly 300,000 fish that included a variety of salmon and trout, walleye, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and muskie.”

Lake Erie Perch Catch Levels for 2018

Yellow Perch Anglers can expect excellent perch fishing in the Western Basin in 2018. Perch anglers in the west will primarily catch fish from 2014 and 2015, providing a good range of sizes. Fall fishing in 2017 produced both excellent sizes and catch rates. The largest perch in the Western Basin will come from 2013 and older year classes.

Fishing Report Lake Erie Monroe, Michigan 05-17-2018

Surface temperature is around 61 degrees. Slow trolling for walleye with Thunderstick Jr. and Bandits seemed to produce. Perch color baits. 60 ft back. Stoney Point and in front of Brest Bay in 20 to 24 ft of water produced nice walleye with only a few under size. The White Bass were thick at times. There are walleye between E buoy and Bolles Harbor in 15 to 18 ft of water, the fish were scattered here and there and thinned out near the Ohio boarder.
