Perch-Walleye Fishing Report Lake Erie Michigan 08-09-2019

Walleye fishing has slowed to a crawl. You can still catch between 8 and 12 walleye but you have to work at it. We marked lots of fish but can’t get them to go with any consistency. The Banana Dike in 14′ of water, around #1 buoy off the Raisin River in Brest Bay and from the Michigan dump along the MI-OH north were decent. Bandits seemed to produce the best at about 80 to 90 ft back, color didn’t matter. The walleye we have been catching are fat and healthy.

My sister with a Lake Erie walleye

The Perch bit has been slow, no limit catches yet. we averaged about 35 per trip. I spent 3 day’s checking spots from the Toledo Light, water intake to West sister and the Canada boarder near Middle Sister with not much production. I caught perch at all the spots but not a lot for all the fuel I burned and time spent. Yesterday I fished for 5 hours from E buoy all the way to Fermi with many stops in between, we caught a handful of perch but lots of small white perch and drum were caught.

Walleye fishing is still good in the Western Basin. We had a real slow day Monday morning due to a cold front and a storm Sunday night. Fishing picked right back up on Monday afternoon. I’m still fishing wiggle warts on one side 60 to 80 ft. back, seemed anything with a red bill was out producing ones with out. The other side I’m running mini discs 70 ft. back with Silver Streak Jr.s  color didn’t seem to matter, I believe it’s the larger profile. High divers set at 3 42 to 46 back and low divers set at 1 32 to 35 back. My speed varies from 2.2 knots to 2.4 knots quartering into the wind seemed to produce better.

Stoney Point seemed to have a good number of catchable walleye in 22 to 24 ft of water with no weeds. The Water Intake in 22ft water was a producer to. Seemed E Buoy area really slowed as with over the Michigan dump, the area around Turtle Island slowed but still holds fish. Around the contours just in front of the Edison plant is holding fish to.

As with all things be kind to your fellow trollers. Don’t sit with your back to the helm staring at your rods, that’s what your buddies are for, it’s a good way to piss off other trollers. I ran over someone’s gear who was not paying attention and approaching from my port side and I’m the bad guy? Remember a boat approaching from your starboard has the right of way

It seems you can’t troll past a spot on the Western Basin of Lake Erie without catching a walleye. Best action I’ve seen is around the #1 bouy off the Raisin River north to Stoney Point to in front of Fermi. There are fish south of the bouy, but the farther you go south of the bouy the less fish there are. There are also walleye between #1 and the Edison plant in 16 to 18 feet of water. Out in front of Bolles Harbor on an angle towards #1 has produced limit catches for my buddies. Seems like the fish are in that area first thing in the morning feeding. As the sun rises they tend to sink to the

bottom, so you may have to lengthen your leads to 80 ft. I’ve been running wiggle warts 60 to 70 ft. back with a trolling speed of between 2.7 and 3 mph depending on the angle of my troll. Best colors are ones with a red bill and gold belly. Straight upwind seems to produce the best for me. Mini discs and spoons have produced just as well at 65 ft back and they help keep the bits of string weeds off the spoons. Check your baits often for weeds. High drivers at 45 (set at 3) and low divers at 32 ft (set at 1) with Silver Streak Jr.  are hot some days and not so other days.

Give way to fellow trollers there are plenty of fish for everyone so don’t crowd each other. We are all out to have some fun and catch some fish. Remember any boat approaching from your left has the Right of Way.

Perch Fishing Report Lake Erie MIchigan 08-17-2018

Perch fishing has been on again off again all this week. Best bets in Michigan are the Michigan dump, between the dump and the Raisin River, also between the Raisin River buoys and Stoney Point in 24′ of water. E buoy and C buoy were producing  last weekend. I have not fished E or C in over a week. This general area has been good for me. A word of caution! if you venture over the line you will get stopped and checked by the Ohio DNR. I’ve been checked this week only being over the line a few hundred yards near E buoy! I see many small boats race out not knowing they are over the line when they see charter boats fishing. The end result, they received tickets for not possessing an Ohio fishing license.

If you see a pack of boats perch fishing it does not necessarily mean they are catching perch. Boats attract boats! If you see a boat catching perch don’t pull up and fish on top of them! The likelihood of you pulling that boats fish to you are usually “O”. Best bet is to slowly cruse the area using your graph, sometimes you will only mark small amounts of fish on or near the bottom. Set up and fish for them, give it 20 minutes or so. Sometimes the perch start off biting slow but more will fish be attracted to the activity and the bite will improve.   If your bite does not improve move a few hundred yards. I’ve moved up 6 or 7 times in a 1 mile area before I found a good school on the feed. You will feel and be more successful if you find your own fish.

Lake Erie Perch Catch Levels for 2018

Yellow Perch Anglers can expect excellent perch fishing in the Western Basin in 2018. Perch anglers in the west will primarily catch fish from 2014 and 2015, providing a good range of sizes. Fall fishing in 2017 produced both excellent sizes and catch rates. The largest perch in the Western Basin will come from 2013 and older year classes.

Surface temperature is around 61 degrees. Slow trolling for walleye with Thunderstick Jr. and Bandits seemed to produce. Perch color baits. 60 ft back. Stoney Point and in front of Brest Bay in 20 to 24 ft of water produced nice walleye with only a few under size. The White Bass were thick at times. There are walleye between E buoy and Bolles Harbor in 15 to 18 ft of water, the fish were scattered here and there and thinned out near the Ohio boarder.

Perch Fishing Report Lake Erie Michigan 07-21-2017

Perch fishing is starting to pick up in Michigan waters. W buoy out in front of Toledo Beach Marina has produced limit catches but it’s on again off again. E buoy area is producing some sizable perch to, but it’s hit or miss. Out towards the end of the Raisin River buoys in 20 feet of water  holds perch but you have to move around til you find a sizable school to fish. The bite seems to start off slow then pick up, give it a half hour in one spot. If the bite doesn’t improve move, sometimes it only takes moving 200 yards or so. Some walleye are being caught but be sure they are over 15″ if you keep them. There have been a lot of tickets passed out for “15” walleye this season on both the Michigan and Ohio side of the lake!! So far Ohio waters have produced the most consistent catches of yellow perch. Either side of the shipping channel north of the Toledo Lighthouse all the way to Sputnik.

DNR creel clerks to collect angler information this summer

As this year’s open-water fishing season gets under way, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds anglers that Fisheries Division personnel are at lakes, rivers and Great Lakes ports collecting fishing data from anglers.

DNR creel clerks will be stationed at boat launches and piers around the state asking anglers questions as they return from fishing trips. Information will be requested on trip length, target species and number and type of fish caught. In some cases, creel clerks may ask to measure or weigh fish and to take scale or other body parts for aging. These data are key information in the DNR’s management of the state’s fisheries resource.

The DNR appreciates anglers’ cooperation with these interviews, and it will only take a couple of minutes to answer the questions.
